Ruta de los Volcanes Andinos

This high-altitude circuit winds through Chile’s volcanic spine, connecting remote mining roads and geological survey tracks between Volcán Llaima and Volcán Villarrica. The route threads through ancient lava fields where the 2008 Llaima eruption left fresh scars across the landscape, passing through the Conguillío National Park buffer zone via abandoned forestry roads. Key waypoint is the Captrén volcanic observatory access road, a technical rocky climb that rewards drivers with crater rim views when weather permits.

Rated difficult due to altitude, loose volcanic scree, and rapidly changing weather conditions. High-clearance 4WD essential, with low-range gearing for steep volcanic slopes and rock gardens. Best tackled May through September when snow levels recede. No permits required for the main route, but fuel up in Temuco—nearest services are 180km apart. Dispersed camping available at several volcanic viewpoints. This is raw volcanic geology at its finest, where you’ll camp under stars with active peaks glowing on the horizon.
