Cordillera del Paine Backcountry Circuit
Secret vehicle route around the Paine massif
While crowds hike the famous W Trek, this vehicle route circles the complete Paine massif through working estancia lands and forgotten gaucho tracks. The circuit starts at Estancia Cerro Guido and threads between the granite towers and the Argentine border, crossing the Río Paine multiple times before reaching the hidden Laguna Azul viewpoint that faces the Torres’ unclimbed east face. The track passes through some of Patagonia’s most pristine grasslands, where guanacos graze beneath peaks that inspired a generation of climbers.
This difficult route demands serious 4WD capability for deep water crossings and technical rocky sections that would challenge a mountain goat. Best tackled December through March when rivers are manageable and weather windows longer, but expect sudden Patagonian storms any time of year. Estancia permission required for some sections — check at Cerro Guido headquarters. The reward is seeing Torres del Paine from angles impossible on foot, camping beneath granite walls where only condors and gauchos venture.
