Patagonia Ice Field Access Road
Gateway to Patagonia's massive ice fields
This 75-kilometer dirt road from Villa O’Higgins to the Candelario Mancilla glacier viewpoint is Patagonia at its most unforgiving — where rivers change course overnight and the weather shifts from sunshine to horizontal sleet in minutes. The route follows old estancia tracks through lenga forest and across the Río Mayer, ending at a primitive camping area where you can actually see the Southern Patagonian Ice Field calving into turquoise lakes. It’s the closest you can drive to the third-largest ice mass outside the polar regions, with the Viedma and Upsala glaciers visible on clear days.
Moderate difficulty that becomes expert-level in bad weather, demanding a well-prepared 4WD with recovery gear and multiple spare tires. River crossings can go from ankle-deep to impassable in hours, so check conditions at the CONAF office in Villa O’Higgins. Best accessed December through March when the worst storms pass, but pack for four seasons regardless. No services beyond Villa O’Higgins — carry all fuel, food, and emergency shelter. This is one of the few places where you can camp within sight of active glaciation while listening to the ice crack and shift through the night.
