Paso de Agua Negra Frontera
Border crossing at the edge of breathable air
The Paso de Agua Negra sits at the edge of the world where Chile meets Argentina, a brutal mountain pass that climbs through lunar landscapes to 4,780 meters above sea level. This isn’t just a border crossing—it’s a commitment to thin air, savage weather, and volcanic terrain that’ll test both machine and driver. The route follows ancient Incan pathways through the Cordillera de los Andes, passing the abandoned Refugio de Agua Negra and crossing into a moonscape of pumice fields and sulfur-stained peaks.
This is expert-level high-altitude driving requiring modified 4WD with proper cooling and fuel systems—altitude sickness hits hard at nearly 16,000 feet. Open only December through March when snow clears, the crossing demands spare oxygen, emergency shelter, and satellite communication. Fuel up in Vicuña before the 280-kilometer commitment to the Argentine border. Those who make it earn bragging rights and some of the most alien terrain on the continent.
