Paso de Agua Negra International Crossing
Extreme Andean border crossing at 4,780 meters
Paso de Agua Negra cuts through the high Cordillera at 4,780 meters, making it one of Chile’s most challenging international border crossings. This remote route connects La Serena with Argentina’s San Juan Province, threading through moonscape terrain where oxygen runs thin and weather changes without warning. The Chilean approach from Vicuña climbs relentlessly through the Elqui Valley wine country before hitting serious elevation gain past Pisco Elqui, where the pavement ends and the real work begins.
Extreme difficulty demands serious preparation—this is no weekend warrior trail. High-clearance 4WD with low-range gearing is mandatory, plus winter gear even in summer due to sudden snow squalls above 4,000 meters. The pass closes frequently between May and September for snow, with best conditions July through March. Carry extra fuel, food for three days, and emergency shelter. Border formalities can take hours on both sides, but the payoff is crossing the Andes backbone through terrain few vehicles will ever see.
