Red River Gorge Technical Challenge
Oklahoma's toughest sandstone canyon challenge
The Red River cuts through some of the wildest country in southeastern Oklahoma, carving sandstone canyons that’ll test your rig and your nerve. This backcountry route follows old logging roads and cattle trails through McCurtain County, crossing Muddy Boggy Creek three times before climbing the ridges above the river bottoms. The highlight is Devil’s Den Falls, where you’ll need to navigate around truck-sized boulders and negotiate a steep descent that’s claimed more than a few oil pans.
This is expert-level territory requiring full skid plates, aggressive tread, and recovery gear. The creek crossings can turn from ankle-deep to axle-deep overnight depending on rainfall, and the sandstone shelves are slick as snot when wet. Best tackled in late summer through early fall when water levels drop. No cell service for 40 miles, so bring paper maps and tell someone your route. The payoff is pristine wilderness camping and some of the most technical driving Oklahoma has to offer.
