Big Bend National Park Santa Elena Canyon Backcountry Road
Desert smuggler's route to towering Rio Grande canyon
This backcountry road follows the Rio Grande where Pancho Villa’s raiders once crossed into Texas and twentieth-century smugglers moved contraband through Santa Elena Canyon’s towering limestone walls. The route connects Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive to the historic Castolon ruins, passing through prime desert habitat where roadrunners dart between ocotillo and javelinas emerge at dusk. The final approach to Santa Elena Canyon offers stunning views of 1,500-foot canyon walls that dwarf the muddy Rio Grande below.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance vehicles, though passenger cars can make it in dry conditions. The biggest challenge is deep sand washes that can trap unwary drivers, especially after flash floods. Winter offers ideal conditions with cool temperatures and minimal crowds. Park entry fee required, and all camping must be in designated areas. Bring plenty of water — summer temperatures routinely exceed 110°F and shade is nonexistent on most of the route.
