Ouachita National Forest Black Fork Mountain Technical Ridge
Ouachita ridgeline logging roads and fire towers
Black Fork Mountain’s spine road climbs the highest peaks in the Ouachita Mountains, following old logging roads and forest service tracks that connect fire towers, hunting camps, and remote radio sites along the Arkansas-Oklahoma border. The main ridge road demands constant attention with steep rocky climbs up to Potato Hill’s 2,681-foot summit, deep ruts through seasonal creeks, and sections that turn into axle-deep mud wallows after any rain. Multiple spur roads branch off to hidden camping spots and old homestead clearings where Depression-era families once scratched out a living.
This is solid intermediate to difficult terrain requiring 4WD low range, good ground clearance, and aggressive tread for the mud sections. Avoid during wet weather unless you enjoy winch work and recovery operations. Spring through fall offers the best conditions. No permits required on National Forest roads, but check hunting seasons before heading out. Excellent dispersed camping throughout, with some of the best stargazing in Oklahoma. You’re deep in genuine backcountry here – cell service disappears quickly and the nearest paved road feels like another world away.
