Cimarron National Grassland Historic Cattle Trail
Original Santa Fe Trail ruts through prairie grassland
This route traces sections of the original Santa Fe Trail and Cimarron Cutoff through 18,000 acres of protected short-grass prairie in the Oklahoma Panhandle. The main track follows historical wagon ruts still visible in the prairie sod, passing Point of Rocks landmark and several pioneer graves. The trail winds along Cimarron River bottomlands where cottonwoods mark old water stops, then climbs onto the high plains for sweeping views across Kansas and Colorado.
Moderate difficulty on mostly graded roads suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though sandy washes can be tricky after storms. Spring and fall offer the best weather and wildflower displays. No permits required, but respect private land boundaries clearly marked throughout the grassland. Dispersed camping allowed with excellent stargazing opportunities. This is authentic frontier country — the same landscape that challenged countless wagon trains heading west to Santa Fe.
