Red Rock Canyon State Park Backcountry Circuit

Red Rock Canyon State Park’s backcountry circuit winds through Oklahoma’s most spectacular red rock country, where 300-million-year-old Permian sandstone creates towering canyon walls and natural bridges. The route follows old ranch roads and creek beds through the park’s remote western section, passing the iconic Natural Bridge formation and skirting the edge of dramatic Rough Canyon. Creek crossings become technical after rain, with loose sandstone shelves that’ll test your line choice and momentum control.

Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD with rock sliders recommended for the rougher creek sections. Spring and fall offer the best conditions before summer heat and winter ice make things miserable. No permits required, but camping is restricted to designated areas only. The payoff is pure Oklahoma geology — blood-red canyons, natural arches, and some of the state’s most photogenic backcountry that feels more like southern Utah than the Great Plains.
