Þórmork Valley Highland Campground
Þórmork sits in a sheltered valley between three glaciers, creating a surprisingly lush oasis in Iceland’s rugged interior. The campground offers basic facilities with pit toilets and cold water taps, surrounded by birch forests and towering peaks. Popular with hikers tackling the Laugavegur trail, it fills up during peak summer but offers solitude in shoulder seasons.
Access requires fording multiple glacial rivers on F249 — high-clearance 4WD mandatory, river levels change hourly. The final approach crosses Krossá river multiple times. No advance reservations, first-come camping. Open roughly June through September depending on river conditions.
