Kelso Depot Historic Railway Museum
This beautifully restored Spanish Colonial Revival depot sits in the heart of Mojave National Preserve, built by Union Pacific in 1924 to serve the remote Kelso section crews. The museum houses exhibits on desert railway operations, mining history, and the challenges of maintaining a railroad through some of California’s most unforgiving terrain. The depot’s red tile roof and white stucco walls stand as an oasis against the surrounding Joshua tree forest.
Access is via paved Kelbaker Road, making it easily reachable by any vehicle. The site includes restrooms and interpretive trails, serving as an excellent break point for overlanders running the Mojave Road or exploring the East Mojave Heritage Trail. No water available, so come prepared.
