Roraima Tepui Base Circuit

Circle the Lost World's most famous tepui

Moderate

The red dirt tracks around Mount Roraima wind through one of South America’s most isolated frontiers, where ancient mining camps and Pemon indigenous settlements dot the Gran Sabana. The 60-kilometer circuit follows defunct diamond mining roads that branch off the main highway near Santa Elena de Uairén, crossing the Kukenán River at low concrete fords before reaching the traditional base camps used by trekkers heading to the tepui summit. Ghost mining equipment rusts alongside crystal-clear streams, and the track passes through several Pemon communities where fuel and basic supplies can be obtained.

This is moderate 4WD terrain requiring high clearance for rocky sections and water crossings that can rise quickly during rainy season. Stock trucks handle most of the route, but mud tires help in wet conditions from May to November. Dry season (December-April) offers the clearest views of the tepui’s vertical walls. No permits needed for the circuit itself, but respect indigenous land protocols. Dispersed camping is possible at several mining camp ruins, with water available from streams. Fuel up in Santa Elena — there’s nothing reliable out there.
