Gran Sabana — Río Aponwao Roadside Dispersed Camp

The Aponwao River cuts through the Gran Sabana’s open grasslands about halfway between Santa Elena and the Paraitepui turnoff. Overlanders have been pulling off the graded dirt shoulder here for years — flat ground, a few scattered trees for shade, and a river you can actually wade into. The tepui walls rise to the east and north, and the sky here at dusk is genuinely absurd. No facilities, no fees, no ranger. Fire is technically restricted inside Canaima National Park — bring your own stove. It gets busy with Venezuelan families on long weekends but otherwise quiet.

Access is straightforward from the main Gran Sabana highway (Troncal 10). High-clearance 2WD handles it fine in dry season. Wet season (June–September) can make the shoulder soft. Cell service is nonexistent — nearest signal is back toward Santa Elena.
