Pine Grove Furnace State Park Campground
Pine Grove Furnace sits in the ruins of an 1800s iron furnace operation, with 74 sites scattered through hardwood forest near two small lakes. The campground maintains that old Pennsylvania feel — thick canopy, stone foundations from the furnace days, and Laurel Lake for swimming and fishing. Sites are mostly level with good spacing, though weekends fill up fast with families from Baltimore and DC. Fire rings and picnic tables at every site, with modern bathhouses and a camp store.
The Appalachian Trail runs right through the park — this is where thru-hikers tackle the famous Half Gallon Challenge at the general store. Open year-round but best April through October. Reservations recommended for weekends. Lake swimming is the main draw in summer heat.
