Sarapiquí River Jungle Penetration Route

This forgotten logging road follows the Sarapiquí River deep into Braulio Carrillo’s buffer zone, where howler monkeys wake you at dawn and toucans flash overhead. The 45-kilometer route starts near La Virgen and pushes southeast through recovering rainforest, passing rusted machinery from 1980s timber operations. You’ll ford three tributaries of the Sarapiquí, including the sketchy Río Sucio crossing at Kilometer 28 where flash floods have washed out the approach twice in recent years.

This is expert-level jungle driving that demands winch-equipped vehicles, recovery gear, and dry season timing (February-April). The clay-based surface becomes impassable soup when wet, and river levels can rise 2 meters in an hour during storms.
