This easy half-mile trail leads to dramatic basalt rock formations carved by the ancient Owens River when it flowed year-round. The ‘fossil falls’ are actually polished volcanic rock sculpted into smooth chutes and pools, creating natural slides and swimming holes when water flows. Red Rock Canyon Road provides access with a small parking area and vault toilet.
The site sits on BLM land with no fees required. Best visited in spring when snowmelt might create temporary water flow. Summer temperatures can be brutal — early morning visits recommended. Popular with photographers for the unique geological formations.
