Laguna de Guatavita Sacred Lake Overlook

Point of Interest

Circular crater lake at 3,100 meters elevation, sacred to the indigenous Muisca people and origin of the El Dorado legend. The lake sits in a perfectly preserved crater surrounded by páramo vegetation. Visitors must join guided tours that follow stone paths to several viewpoints around the rim. The deep blue-green water contrasts dramatically with golden grasslands and misty Andean peaks.

Located 75km northeast of Bogotá via good paved roads through Sesquilé. Park entrance requires advance reservations and guided tours run hourly. Bring warm layers as mountain weather changes quickly. No camping permitted, but the nearby town of Guatavita has basic accommodations. Best visited mid-morning when mist often lifts to reveal clear views.
