Sierra de Juárez Pine Forest High Route
Baja's secret mountain forests at 6,000 feet
Most overlanders never see Baja’s other side — the snow-dusted pine forests of the Sierra de Juárez. This high-altitude traverse starts at the Laguna Hanson observatory road and follows forestry tracks through Parque Nacional Constitución de 1857, climbing past Picacho del Diablo’s eastern flanks. The route threads between granite boulders and Jeffrey pines, crossing seasonal streams at Arroyo Grande before connecting to the old timber roads near Ejido Héroes de la Independencia.
Expert-level driving required due to loose granite, steep grades, and seasonal snow above 5,500 feet. Modified 4WD with skid plates essential. Winter access impossible; best May through October. No services for 60+ miles — carry extra fuel, water, and recovery gear. The reward is experiencing Baja’s hidden alpine ecosystem and camping among pines with views across the Laguna Salada desert 4,000 feet below.
