Mourne Mountains Silent Valley to Ben Crom Track

Granite peaks and reservoir engineering heritage

Moderate

The granite spine of the Mourne Mountains hides a network of service roads that connect Silent Valley and Ben Crom reservoirs, built in the 1930s when Belfast needed clean water from these remote peaks. The track winds through heather moorland beneath Slieve Binnian’s towering bulk, crossing stone bridges over mountain streams while dodging the famous Mourne Wall that snakes across fifteen summits. You’ll navigate around massive granite tors and through the gap between Slieve Binnian and Silent Valley’s dam wall.

This is moderate terrain requiring high clearance for rocky sections and loose granite scree, especially near Ben Crom. The track is officially closed to public vehicles but walking access remains – check current restrictions with Northern Ireland Water before attempting. Best tackled April through September when weather permits safe navigation. The reward is solitude among Ireland’s most dramatic mountain scenery, with views across to the Isle of Man on clear days. Bring maps and emergency gear – mobile coverage is nonexistent in the valleys.
