Hocking Hills State Forest Fire Tower Ridge Technical Circuit
Sandstone ridge climbs to forgotten fire towers
Hocking County’s rugged sandstone ridges hide a network of old fire tower access roads that demand serious approach angles and rock crawler skills. The circuit connects three abandoned tower sites via steep ridge climbs that’ll test your vehicle’s capabilities and your nerve — the approach to Haynes Tower involves a 30-degree sandstone shelf that’s claimed more than a few oil pans. Spectacular views over the Hocking River valley reward those who make the climbs.
Difficult technical driving with steep grades, loose rock, and tight switchbacks. Requires experienced driver and well-built 4WD with armor, low gearing, and recovery points. Best attempted in dry conditions — wet sandstone becomes treacherous quickly. Fall offers prime conditions with spectacular foliage. Day trip from Logan with primitive camping possible at designated sites. Popular with local rock crawlers so expect company on weekends.
