Shawnee State Forest Backpack Trail Service Road Complex
Ohio's forgotten backcountry service roads
Deep in southern Ohio’s most remote forest, this network of gated service roads cuts through terrain that feels more like Kentucky than the Buckeye State. Starting from Forest Road 3 near Turkey Creek Lake, the route threads through steep hollows and ridgeline timber roads that parallel the 16-mile Backpack Trail. The real challenge comes at Copperhead Hollow where seasonal creek crossings and tight switchbacks test your line choice through stands of century-old oak and hickory.
This is moderate to difficult territory requiring high-clearance 4WD with good articulation for the creek beds and steep approaches. Gates stay locked October through March, and even in legal season you’ll want permission from the district office. No services for 30 miles in any direction, so pack fuel, water, and recovery gear. What you get is genuine solitude in Ohio’s wildest public land — plus some of the best dispersed camping spots in the state.
