Salt Fork State Park Lodge Fire Road Circuit

Coal country technical with deep creek fords

Difficult

Salt Fork State Park’s fire road network cuts through 17,000 acres of reclaimed strip mine country in eastern Ohio’s coal belt. The circuit starts behind the lodge and follows old mine haul roads through the Kennedy Stone House ruins, where 1800s settlers first worked these hills. The route crosses Salt Fork Creek four times, including a technical ford near the old Hosak Run coal tipple where water depth can hit 18 inches after spring rains. Mile 14 brings the steepest climb up reclaimed highwall to panoramic views across the Tuscarawas River valley.

Rated difficult for the water crossings and steep clay grades that turn treacherous when wet. Stock 4WD handles dry conditions, but lockers help in the creek beds and on the slick clay climbs. Best tackled April through October when water levels are predictable. The park allows backcountry camping with permits, and several primitive sites sit along the ridge sections. You’ll earn every mile of this one, but the solitude and mining history make it worthwhile for serious Ohio wheelers.
