Wayne National Forest Archers Fork Technical Creek Crossing Loop

Technical creek crossings through Appalachian foothills

Difficult

Archers Fork cuts deep through Wayne National Forest’s Athens Unit, where eight creek crossings and abandoned strip mine benches create Ohio’s most technical backcountry challenge. The 18-mile loop follows old logging roads and mining access routes across sandstone ridges and through hollows where Archers Fork, Monday Creek, and Little Monday Creek converge in a maze of seasonal water crossings and loose shale climbs.

Difficult territory requiring experienced drivers, recovery gear, and 4WD with low range for creek crossings that can reach 30 inches during spring runoff. Rock sliders recommended for the technical sections where mining equipment carved narrow shelf roads into hillsides. Best tackled late summer through fall when water levels drop. No permits required, but fuel up in Athens — it’s 40 miles to the nearest gas. You’ll experience Ohio’s wildest country and genuine Appalachian backcountry solitude 90 minutes from Columbus.
