Shade River State Forest Technical Loop

Where coal mines meet creek crossings.

Difficult

The abandoned strip mines of Shade River State Forest have been reclaimed by nature, but the terrain still tells the story of Ohio’s coal mining past through steep spoil banks and exposed shale cliffs. This technical loop follows old mining roads through a maze of deep creek valleys and near-vertical clay slopes that turn into grease when wet. The namesake Shade River crossing at mile 8 is the crux move — a rocky ford that’s knee-deep in spring runoff and exposes every weakness in your differential seals.

This is serious 4WD territory requiring lockers, aggressive tread, and the wisdom to turn around when conditions deteriorate. The clay soil here is legendary for creating unrecoverable bog holes after rain, and the remote location means self-recovery is your only option. Late summer through early fall offers the best conditions, with firm ground and lower water levels. No facilities exist beyond basic pit toilets at the parking area, but dispersed camping is allowed. The reward is complete solitude in some of Ohio’s most challenging off-road terrain.
