Scioto River Bottoms Heritage Circuit
Ancient Shawnee routes through Ohio's prairie past
The Scioto River meanders through central Ohio’s ancient floodplains, where this network of levee roads and field edges traces routes used by Shawnee hunters for centuries. Starting at Deer Creek State Park, the circuit follows gravel maintenance roads through the Pickaway Plains, passing the remnants of Hopewell earthworks that predate European contact by 2,000 years. The highlight is Stage’s Pond State Nature Preserve, where an old farm road leads to one of Ohio’s last intact prairie wetlands and the largest great blue heron rookery in the region.
This is perfect for stock SUVs and makes an excellent introduction to Ohio’s backcountry with easy gravel surfaces and minimal elevation change. Spring migration brings incredible birding, while fall colors along Walnut Creek are spectacular. No permits required, but respect hunting seasons from October through January. Multiple camping options at nearby Deer Creek State Park make this ideal for weekend exploring with the family or groups new to overlanding.
