Massanutten Mountain Forest Road 66 Signal Knob Trail

Civil War signal station with valley overlooks.

Moderate

Forest Road 66 winds up the northern end of Massanutten Mountain to Signal Knob, a strategic Civil War lookout point that both armies used to observe Shenandoah Valley movements. The narrow dirt road starts at Strasburg Reservoir and immediately begins climbing through thick forest, with several sharp switchbacks and loose rock sections that demand steady throttle control. At mile 3.8, the route passes the remains of Confederate earthworks before the final rocky push to the summit, where a short hike leads to the actual signal station site with panoramic views of the valley floor 1,100 feet below.

This route requires high-clearance 4WD, especially during wet conditions when the clay-based soil becomes treacherous. Spring through fall offers the best access, though hunting seasons may bring heavy traffic. No permits required, but parking at the summit is extremely limited. Water is scarce on the mountain, so bring plenty. Cell service improves dramatically at the top. The combination of Civil War history, technical driving challenges, and commanding views makes this a standout route for overlanders seeking both adventure and education in Virginia’s Shenandoah region.
