Channels State Forest Backcountry Circuit
Appalachian slot canyons rival the Southwest.
The Channels State Forest Backcountry Circuit threads through 800-million-year-old Clinch Sandstone formations that carved Virginia’s deepest gorges. This 12-mile loop follows old logging roads through “The Channels”—narrow slot canyons barely wider than a Jeep, where towering sandstone walls rise 100 feet overhead. The route includes three technical creek fords through Guest River tributaries and passes the historic Channels Overlook, where early settlers first gazed into what locals call “Virginia’s Grand Canyon.”
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD with decent approach angles for the creek crossings. Rock sliders recommended for the narrow canyon sections where sandstone walls can tag your panels. Open year-round, but spring runoff makes the fords sketchy until late May. No permits needed, and dispersed camping is allowed throughout the 724-acre forest. Pack extra water and food—cell service is nonexistent once you drop into the canyons. You’ll experience geological wonders that rival Utah’s slot canyons, right here in Appalachia.
