Castle Peaks National Natural Landmark
Castle Peaks juts from the desert like a fortress of ancient volcanic rock, its jagged spires and knife-edge ridges creating one of the most distinctive landmarks in the eastern Mojave. These dark rhyolite formations, formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago, offer excellent scrambling opportunities and panoramic views across the Mojave National Preserve. The area sees light visitation despite being visible from I-40, making it a peaceful stop for those willing to venture off the beaten path.
Access requires high-clearance vehicles via rough desert roads from either Essex Road or the Mojave Road itself. No established trails exist—navigation is by sight and GPS. The area can be extremely hot in summer with no shade, making spring and fall the ideal seasons for exploration.
