BLM Christmas Valley Back Country Byway Dispersed Area

Dispersed Camping

Scattered along the Christmas Valley Back Country Byway, this BLM dispersed area offers solitude in Oregon’s high desert landscape of sagebrush, juniper, and ancient lake beds. Multiple primitive campsites dot the 54-mile route between Christmas Valley and Silver Lake, with wide-open views of surrounding rimrock and distant peaks. Sites range from roadside pull-offs to more secluded spots a quarter-mile off the main track. No facilities or services — pack out all trash and bring your own water.

Access via well-maintained gravel road suitable for any vehicle with decent clearance. Popular with hunters during fall seasons, otherwise quiet most of the year. Winds can be fierce in spring, and summer temperatures often exceed 90°F. Winter access possible but check road conditions. 14-day stay limit, camp 200 feet from water sources. Fort Rock State Natural Area lies 20 miles east for sightseeing.
