Sumter National Forest Stevens Creek Heritage Trail
Revolutionary War paths through gold country.
Stevens Creek cuts through the Sumter National Forest like a scar from the Revolutionary War, where Continental Army scouts tracked British cavalry through these same hardwood bottoms in 1780. The trail follows old logging roads and creek crossings through mixed pine-hardwood forest, passing the ruins of Dorn Gold Mine—South Carolina’s first commercial gold operation from the 1820s. You’ll ford Stevens Creek three times, with the deepest crossing at Dorn Mill requiring careful line selection during spring runoff.
This moderate trail demands high-clearance 4WD for creek crossings and rocky climbs out of the creek bottom. Spring and fall offer the best conditions—summer brings thick undergrowth and aggressive ticks. No permits needed, but check creek levels after heavy rain. Dispersed camping available at several clearings above the flood line. The payoff is solitude in some of the most historic forest in the Piedmont, where you can still find old quartz mining pits and Revolutionary War-era campsites.
