Savannah River Site Road A Security Perimeter Trail
Cold War nuclear site perimeter through pristine habitat
Road A traces the outer security boundary of the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site, a sprawling 310-square-mile nuclear facility that’s been locked away from public access since 1950. This gravel perimeter road cuts through some of South Carolina’s most pristine lowland habitat — bottomland hardwoods, Carolina bays, and longleaf pine savannas that haven’t seen development in over 70 years. Wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and even wild hogs wander freely across the track, while the occasional concrete security tower reminds you this isn’t your typical forest road.
Easy to moderate difficulty on maintained gravel surfaces, suitable for any high-clearance vehicle. Special use permits required through DOE — this isn’t a drive-up-and-go situation. Tours run sporadically through the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, typically spring and fall. No camping allowed, obviously. It’s a unique glimpse into what happens when humans abandon 300 square miles of prime Southern habitat for half a century — nature takes it back with a vengeance.
