Finger Lakes National Forest Hector Backbone Trail

The Hector Backbone Trail traverses the spine of New York’s only National Forest, delivering sweeping views across Seneca and Cayuga Lakes from ridgetop meadows that were once Seneca Nation hunting grounds. This route connects a network of old farm roads, logging tracks, and conservation management paths through diverse terrain including gorges, wetlands, and reclaimed agricultural land. The centerpiece is the climb to the Finger Lakes Trail overlook, where a rocky outcrop provides 180-degree views of the Finger Lakes region. Technical challenges include steep descents into Hector Falls gorge and muddy sections through the Burnt Hill Wildlife Management Area.

Difficulty ranges from easy to moderate depending on recent weather, with high-clearance vehicles recommended for rocky sections and muddy bottomland. Avoid during hunting season (October-December) and spring mud season when clay soils become impassable. Best access is May through September with dry conditions. Free camping available at designated sites throughout the forest. Stock up in Watkins Glen before entering – the route offers solitude but limited services.
