Talladega National Forest Forest Road 548 Chandler Springs Technical Loop
CCC springs and rocky ridges test every rig.
Forest Road 548 cuts a punishing line across Chandler Mountain’s rocky spine, connecting the fire tower to the stone-lined Chandler Springs built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The route starts at the tower’s gravel access road but quickly deteriorates into loose shale and exposed bedrock sections that’ll test your undercarriage and line choice. Key waypoints include the Devil’s Backbone ridge crossing at mile 3.2 and the technical descent into Chandler Springs canyon, where water flows year-round from hand-cut stone channels.
This is legitimate technical 4×4 territory requiring high clearance, skid plates, and aggressive tread. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer heat can be brutal on the exposed ridges. No permits needed, but fuel up in Anniston—this loop burns gas on the climbs. The payoff is solitude in some of Alabama’s most underrated high country, plus cold spring water that’s been flowing since before the Cherokee walked these ridges.
