Wateree River Bluff Archaeological Trail

Cherokee trading path river bluff route.

Easy

Following ancient Cherokee trading paths along the Wateree River bluffs, this route connects multiple archaeological sites including pre-Columbian shell middens and Civil War-era Confederate earthworks. The sandy track winds through longleaf pine restoration areas and hardwood bottoms, passing the remnants of 18th-century trading posts where Cherokee, Catawba, and European traders met. Several pull-offs provide access to river bluffs offering expansive views across the Wateree River floodplain toward the distant Blue Ridge foothills.

Easy trail suitable for stock vehicles with decent ground clearance — sand can get soft after rains but rarely impassable. Spring and fall offer the best conditions with moderate temperatures and lower river levels. Dispersed camping allowed along designated areas, though sites fill up during hunting season. Respect all archaeological sites and follow Leave No Trace principles. Cell service decent near the main road but drops off along the river sections.
