Harbison State Forest Sand Hills Circuit

The sandy two-tracks of Harbison State Forest wind through 2,177 acres of Midlands pine forest just 15 minutes from downtown Columbia, offering surprising technical challenges hidden in plain sight. Originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, these fire roads and maintenance trails cut through rolling sand hills where longleaf pines tower over wire grass and wildflowers. The main loop connects the Environmental Education Center to Broad River access points via Spider Trail and Fire Tower Road, with several creek crossings and steep sandy climbs that’ll test traction control.

This moderate trail requires high-clearance 4WD during wet seasons when the clay-sand mix turns slippery, though stock vehicles handle it fine in dry conditions. Open year-round with no permits needed, spring and fall offer the best weather without summer humidity or winter mud. The 8-mile network provides excellent practice for technical sand driving without venturing far from civilization, plus primitive camping opportunities along the Broad River make it perfect for overnight shakedown runs.
