Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail
Circle Florida's liquid heart through cattle country.
The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail circles the Big O — Florida’s liquid heart — through working cattle country that feels more like Montana than the Sunshine State. You’ll roll past Belle Glade’s sugar cane fields, cross the Kissimmee River, and navigate levee roads where alligators sun themselves just yards from your bumper. The highlight is Fisheating Creek, where cypress swamps meet prairie and you can camp under Spanish moss older than your grandparents.
This is easy overlanding — graded dirt and paved farm roads that any high-clearance vehicle can handle. Fuel up in Clewiston or Okeechobee because services get sparse on the south shore. Best tackled October through March when bugs won’t carry you off and water levels are down. You’ll earn sweeping views of America’s second-largest freshwater lake, plus some of the best bass fishing and bird watching in the Southeast.
