Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Ridge Trail System
Daniel Boone's path through the Appalachian wall.
The Ridge Trail System winds through Cumberland Gap National Historical Park along the same ridgelines Daniel Boone and early settlers used to breach the Appalachian wall. The main route follows old logging roads and Civil War-era military paths up to Tri-State Peak, where Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee meet at 1,990 feet. Expect rocky climbs through dense hardwood forests and technical descents past Cudjo Cave and Sand Cave, with multiple water crossings along Clear Creek.
This moderate to difficult trail demands high-clearance 4WD with skid plates for the boulder-strewn sections and creek crossings. Best tackled April through October when weather cooperates, though spring means muddy conditions. No permits required, but dispersed camping is limited to designated backcountry sites. Stock up on fuel in Middlesboro before heading in — cell service disappears once you’re on the ridge. You’ll earn panoramic views of three states and walk paths carved by America’s westward expansion.
