Chickasawhay River Bottoms Wildlife Management Area Fire Road Complex
Mississippi's wildest river bottom backroads
The Chickasawhay River carves through some of Mississippi’s wildest country, and the fire road network in this 7,800-acre WMA follows every bend and oxbow through cypress-tupelo swamps that haven’t changed since the Choctaw hunted here. You’ll cross wooden bridges over sloughs where alligators sun themselves, navigate muddy two-tracks that disappear under seasonal flooding, and climb onto oak ridges where Confederate deserters once hid from both armies. The main stem runs 12 miles from Highway 63 to the boat launch at Eucutta Creek, but side spurs branch off to primitive hunt camps and forgotten homestead sites.
This is moderate terrain that demands high clearance and all-terrain tires—those fire roads turn into axle-deep gumbo when wet, and you’ll encounter water crossings that vary from ankle-deep to hood-high depending on recent rains. Best tackled in dry months from November through March when the mosquitoes die back and the roads firm up. No permits required, but check hunting seasons before wandering around. You’ll need bug spray, recovery gear, and patience. What you get is some of the most pristine river bottom habitat left in Mississippi, plus solitude that’s getting harder to find.
