Homochitto National Forest Fire Tower Road

Hidden CCC-era fire roads through Mississippi hills.

Moderate

This forgotten fire access road winds through Homochitto National Forest’s steepest terrain, climbing 400 feet through hardwood hollows to reach an abandoned fire tower with panoramic views of the Mississippi River bottoms. The route follows old Forest Service Road 402, passing through areas logged during the Great Depression’s Civilian Conservation Corps era, with crumbling concrete foundations marking old CCC camps. Creek crossings at Clear Springs Branch and several unnamed drainages can run knee-deep during spring rains.

Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD for the final two miles where erosion has cut deep ruts and exposed limestone ledges. Best tackled during dry months from June through October when the clay doesn’t turn to axle-deep gumbo. No permits needed, but fuel up in Meadville — it’s 30 miles of forest roads to the nearest gas station. The payoff is solitude in Mississippi’s most overlooked national forest and camping spots that haven’t seen tire tracks in months.
