Carrabassett River Tote Road
Historic logging route through Bigelow backcountry
The Carrabassett River Tote Road cuts through some of Maine’s most rugged backcountry, following an old logging route that once hauled timber from the Bigelow Range to the Dead River mills. This 18-mile dirt and gravel track parallels the Carrabassett River through dense hardwood forests and boggy lowlands, with several creek crossings that can turn nasty after heavy rains. The route passes through active logging operations and connects to the Flagstaff Lake area, offering glimpses of the Bigelow Peaks through the canopy.
This is a moderate trail requiring high-clearance 4WD, especially during mud season and after storms when the creek crossings become more technical. Best traveled from late June through October when logging operations are active and road maintenance is regular. No permits required, but respect active logging areas and yield to industrial traffic. Excellent dispersed camping opportunities along the river with decent brook trout fishing and mountain views. You’ll find solitude, working forest atmosphere, and access to some of Maine’s wildest country.
