Bienville National Forest Forest Road 545 Dugdemona River Technical Loop

Clay and sand gauntlet through timber country

Difficult

Forest Road 545 and its connecting spurs carve a demanding 18-mile loop through Bienville National Forest’s timber management areas, where massive logging trucks create axle-deep ruts and seasonal flooding turns red clay into Louisiana gumbo. The route crosses Dugdemona River three times via concrete ford crossings that can run axle-deep during spring floods, while connecting trails thread through clear-cuts recovering from timber harvests. Mile marker 12 passes the concrete ruins of a CCC camp from the 1930s, where Depression-era crews planted thousands of the longleaf pines that tower overhead today.

This difficult route requires serious 4WD capability and recovery gear—stock vehicles need not apply. Aggressive tread and differential locks help navigate the sticky clay that can strand unwary drivers for days. Best attempted May through August when water levels drop, though even dry conditions demand respect for the deep sand pockets that swallow momentum. No camping within the forest service boundaries, but dispersed sites exist on adjacent private timber land with landowner permission. Cell service exists only at the highest ridgelines.
