Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge Unit B Pool Road System

Unit B of Lacassine refuge encompasses 16,000 acres of impounded freshwater marsh managed for waterfowl, accessed via a network of grass-strip roads originally built for aerial rice seeding operations in the 1960s. The route follows raised roadbeds between managed pools where water levels are precisely controlled by a system of water control structures and pumps. You’ll navigate past abandoned rice levees, active alligator nests, and observation blinds built for waterfowl research, crossing numerous culverts and low-water bridges that can flood during high water events.

Easy to moderate driving on maintained grass and gravel roads, suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles during dry conditions. The challenge comes from seasonal flooding—check with refuge staff before entering as roads can be underwater during winter drawdowns or summer storm events. Best access is spring through fall when roads are firmest and wildlife activity peaks. This is Louisiana waterfowl management at its finest, offering glimpses of techniques used to maintain some of the most productive duck habitat in North America, plus excellent photography opportunities for wading birds and raptors.
