Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park Red Dune Route

Cross-border Kalahari wilderness through red dunes

Moderate

The Red Dune Route cuts through the heart of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, following the fossil riverbeds of the Auob and Nossob rivers where oryx and springbok gather at scattered waterholes. The track winds between towering red sand dunes and camel thorn trees, crossing from South Africa into Botswana territory through some of the most pristine Kalahari wilderness. Key waypoints include Mata Mata gate, Leeudril waterhole, and the confluence at Union’s End where two ancient rivers meet in a salt pan that hasn’t seen water in decades.

This moderate route demands high-clearance 4WD for the deep sand sections and rocky calcrete stretches, plus recovery gear and extra fuel for the 240km between fuel stops. Best traveled April through September when temperatures drop below 35°C and game congregates around permanent water sources. Park permits required at both gates, with designated camping at Mata Mata, Nossob, and Twee Rivieren camps. You’ll earn 360-degree views of endless red dunes and some of Africa’s best predator viewing at the waterholes.
