Peninsula Valdes Circuit
Patagonian peninsula where orcas hunt on the beach
Peninsula Valdés juts into the South Atlantic like a giant thumb, connected to mainland Patagonia by the narrow Ameghino Isthmus. The 360-kilometer circuit takes you past Punta Norte where orcas beach themselves to hunt sea lion pups, around Golfo San José where southern right whales calve from June to December, and down to Punta Delgada’s elephant seal colonies. The track to Punta Norte is particularly rough—40 kilometers of washboard ripio that’ll rattle your fillings loose.
Any stock 4WD can handle the main circuit, but the side tracks to wildlife viewing areas demand patience and spare tires. Bring plenty of water, food, and warm clothes—Patagonian weather changes without warning, and services are only at Puerto Pirámides. Best wildlife viewing runs May through December for whales, September through March for penguins and seals. What makes this special isn’t just the animals—it’s watching apex predators hunt in one of the last truly wild places on earth.
