Trans Euro Trail Eastern Romania Section
Eastern Carpathian wilderness challenge
The TET-E Romania section cuts through the wild heart of the Eastern Carpathians, following forgotten logging roads and shepherd tracks that haven’t seen significant traffic since communist-era mining operations ceased. This 380-kilometer stretch connects remote Transylvanian villages through dense forests, alpine meadows, and river valleys where brown bears still outnumber tourists. Key challenges include the technical descent into Bicaz Gorge and the rocky climb over Prislop Pass, where medieval salt traders once hauled their loads between Moldavia and Transylvania.
Rated Expert for extended technical terrain, river crossings, and navigation complexity through unmarked forest roads. Requires capable 4WD with underbody protection, recovery gear, and GPS navigation as signage is minimal. Best tackled May-September when snowmelt subsides but before autumn hunting season. Fuel range critical – some sections exceed 150 kilometers between stations. Rewards include encounters with traditional mountain culture, exceptional wilderness camping, and some of Europe’s last pristine mountain ecosystems.
