Fogaras Mountains High Ridge Military Road

Cold War military ridge above the clouds

Expert

Built during the Cold War as a military communications route, this high-altitude track runs along the main ridge of Romania’s Fagaras Mountains, connecting abandoned observation posts and radar installations. The route threads between peaks like Moldoveanu (Romania’s highest at 2,544m) and Negoiu, following a rocky spine that drops off dramatically on both sides. Key waypoints include the abandoned weather station at Omu Peak and the ruins of military bunkers every few kilometers, reminders of when this ridge served as an early warning line against NATO aircraft.

Expert-level route requiring serious mountain driving skills — the track is barely two ruts wide with precipitous drops and no guardrails. High-clearance 4WD with low-range essential, plus recovery gear and cold-weather kit. Weather changes fast above 2,000m; attempt only July through September when snow clears. No fuel, water, or services for 80km. Camping possible at shepherd huts near Bâlea Lake. You’ll earn views across Transylvania that few tourists ever see, plus genuine solitude in Europe’s most rugged mountains.
