Scottish Highlands Cape Wrath Track

Britain's most remote headland via ferry and MOD range

Difficult

Cape Wrath sits at mainland Britain’s northwestern extremity, accessible only via the Keoldale Ferry across Kyle of Durness—a tiny boat that carries just one vehicle at a time when weather permits. The 11-mile track beyond crosses the Parph moorland through an active military bombing range, where red flags mean live firing exercises and no passage. You’ll navigate single-track with passing places, bog crossings that swallow vehicles, and gradients that test clutches while 300-foot cliffs drop into the North Atlantic’s fury.

This is serious expedition territory requiring high-clearance 4WD with diff-locks, recovery gear, and self-sufficiency for several days. Weather changes without warning—summer’s the only viable season, and even then expect horizontal rain and zero visibility. Check Ministry of Defence schedules for range closures, and book the ferry in advance during peak season. No services beyond Durness, so carry extra fuel, food, and emergency shelter. You’ll reach Britain’s last great wilderness, where lighthouse keepers once endured complete isolation watching over the Pentland Firth’s ship-killing waters.
