Rila Mountain Military Circuit

Secret military roads to the Balkans' highest peak

Difficult

The Bulgarian military carved these supply roads through the Rila Mountains in the 1960s to connect a network of radar installations and concrete bunkers that watched for NATO aircraft crossing from Greece. Most tourists stick to the monastery, but these forgotten tracks climb past the tree line to Musala peak—the Balkans’ highest point at 9,596 feet—threading between alpine lakes so remote they don’t appear on most maps. The route passes through 14 abandoned military installations, including a massive underground complex near Borovets that once housed 500 personnel.

Difficult rating earns its keep with loose shale, stream crossings, and grades that hit 30% on the approach to Malka Musala. Stock 4WD minimum, but lockers help on wet rock sections. Weather turns lethal above 8,000 feet—carry emergency gear and check forecasts obsessively. Best June through September when snow clears, though afternoon thunderstorms are daily occurrences. No permits but Bulgarian border guards patrol randomly. This circuit delivers what Eastern Europe does best: genuine wilderness earned through genuine suffering, with camping spots that feel like the end of the world.
