Green Road (Strada Verde) – Romania

Cold War mountain pass through the Carpathians

Difficult

The Green Road cuts across Romania’s Carpathian Mountains like a scar from the Cold War era, originally built as a military route where Soviet armored divisions could move between valleys. This 35-kilometer technical mountain pass climbs from Bran to Zarnesti through terrain that’ll test your rig and your nerve, with exposed ridgelines, loose shale sections, and hairpin turns that drop into nothing. The route peaks at Omu Pass at 2,507 meters, where you’ll find the remnants of military installations and views that stretch across Transylvania.

This is proper mountain driving that demands a capable 4×4 with low range and good ground clearance. Weather changes fast up here—snow can hit even in summer, and fog rolls in without warning. Best tackled June through September when most sections are passable. No permits needed, but fuel up in Brasov and carry water, recovery gear, and warm clothes. The Green Road rewards the prepared with some of Europe’s most dramatic mountain scenery and a genuine taste of Romanian backcountry that few tourists ever see.
